Vietnam — Black Soldiers in America's Most Contested War

African Americans served in disproportionately high numbers during the Vietnam War — and paid a disproportionately high price. Comprising roughly 11% of the U.S. population, Black soldiers accounted for nearly 23% of combat deaths in the war's early years. They served with valor in some of the most intense engagements of the conflict, often while fighting two battles simultaneously — one in the jungles of Southeast Asia, and one for civil rights back home.

Notable Units & Contributions

  • 173rd Airborne Brigade — one of the first major U.S. ground combat units deployed to Vietnam
  • 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) — pioneered air assault tactics with significant Black troop participation
  • 9th Infantry Division — heavy combat operations in the Mekong Delta
  • Medal of Honor recipients — 20 African Americans were awarded the Medal of Honor for actions in Vietnam

Their Story

These soldiers returned home to a divided nation — often without the recognition they deserved. Our Vietnam collection is a tribute to their service, their sacrifice, and their resilience.
