From the jungles of Leyte and Luzon to the liberation of civilian internees at Los Baños, the 11th Airborne conducted some of the most daring and complex airborne and amphibious operations of the entire war. They were paratroopers and glider infantry, fighting in terrain that was never designed for airborne operations — and winning anyway.

The 11th Airborne Division — Angels of the Pacific

Activated in February 1943 at Camp Mackall, North Carolina, the 11th Airborne Division deployed to the Pacific in 1944. They fought through the Philippine campaign on Leyte and Luzon, conducting combat jumps and amphibious landings under General Douglas MacArthur's command. Their most celebrated operation was the Raid at Los Baños on February 23, 1945 — a perfectly coordinated airborne assault, amphibious crossing, and guerrilla attack that liberated 2,147 Allied civilian internees from a Japanese prison camp without a single internee casualty. Military historians consider it one of the most successful rescue operations in history. After Japan's surrender, the 11th Airborne was the first American unit to land on the Japanese home islands — touching down at Atsugi Airfield on August 30, 1945.
