This tribute tee honors the soldiers of the 11th Airborne Division who fought through the Philippine campaign — from the beaches of Leyte to the mountains of Luzon, from the streets of Manila to the prison camp at Los Baños. They were paratroopers fighting as light infantry, glider men crossing rivers under fire, and airborne soldiers doing whatever the mission required in terrain that was never designed for them.

The Philippine Campaign — From Leyte to Liberation

The 11th Airborne landed on Leyte in November 1944 and fought through the island's rugged interior before moving to Luzon in January 1945. On Luzon, they conducted a combat parachute jump at Tagaytay Ridge — one of the few true airborne assaults of the Pacific War — and then fought their way toward Manila as part of the liberation of the Philippine capital. Their most celebrated moment came on February 23, 1945: the Raid at Los Baños, a perfectly synchronized airborne assault, amphibious crossing, and guerrilla attack that liberated 2,147 Allied civilian internees from a Japanese prison camp without a single internee casualty. General Colin Powell later called it the textbook example of a perfect military raid. The 11th Airborne earned that distinction in the Philippines, one brutal mile at a time.
