Low Bird. High Bird. One Team. No Mercy.

The concept was simple. The execution was anything but. A small, fast OH-6 Cayuse — the Loach — flew low and slow over the jungle canopy, drawing fire and flushing the enemy into the open. Above it, an AH-1 Cobra gunship circled at altitude, watching, waiting. The moment the Loach took fire, the Cobra rolled in. The enemy had just revealed their position to one of the most lethal weapons systems in the Vietnam War.

This was the Hunter-Killer Team — the signature tactic of the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) in Vietnam, and one of the most innovative and dangerous combat aviation roles of the entire war. The Loach crews flew with almost no armor and no margin for error. The Cobra crews had to be precise enough to engage targets within meters of their own scouts. Both crews trusted each other completely. They had to.

This tribute tee honors every pilot, crew chief, and door gunner who flew Hunter-Killer missions with the 1st Cav — the men who invented a new kind of warfare over the jungles of Vietnam and paid for every lesson in blood.

The 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) — First Team, First In

The 1st Cavalry Division arrived in Vietnam in 1965 as the Army's first fully airmobile division — a revolutionary concept that replaced trucks and boots with helicopters and speed. The Hunter-Killer team tactic emerged from the division's air cavalry squadrons as a solution to a fundamental problem: how do you find an enemy that hides in triple-canopy jungle and refuses to stand and fight? You send a Loach down into the trees to make him show himself — and you have a Cobra overhead to finish the conversation. The 1st Cav's air cavalry troopers flew thousands of Hunter-Killer missions across III and I Corps, from the Ia Drang Valley to the A Shau Valley, from the Central Highlands to the Cambodian border. They were always first in and last out.
