As the reconnaissance and security arm of the 25th Infantry Division — "Tropic Lightning" — the 3/4 Cav operated in some of the most dangerous terrain in III Corps: the Iron Triangle, the Ho Chi Minh Trail corridors, and the tunnel networks that honeycombed the ground beneath their boots.

This tribute tee honors the troopers of the 3rd Squadron, 4th Cavalry — the scouts, the tankers, the aero-rifle platoon soldiers, and the helicopter crews who flew cover for ground operations out of Cu Chi. They were the eyes and the edge of the 25th Infantry Division, and they never stopped moving.

The 3/4 Cav at Cu Chi — Scouts Out

The 3rd Squadron, 4th Cavalry arrived in Vietnam in 1966 as part of the 25th Infantry Division's deployment to Cu Chi, Tay Ninh Province. Operating M48 Patton tanks, M113 armored cavalry assault vehicles, and OH-6 Cayuse scout helicopters, the squadron conducted continuous reconnaissance, screening, and security operations across III Corps. Cu Chi Base Camp — built directly above one of the most extensive Viet Cong tunnel systems in South Vietnam — was a constant reminder that the enemy was everywhere, including underfoot. The troopers of the 3/4 Cav patrolled those roads, cleared those tunnels, and held that ground with the quiet, relentless professionalism that defines the cavalry tradition.
