1,700 Miles. No Fighter Escort. For Warsaw.
In the late summer of 1944, the people of Warsaw were dying. The Polish Home Army had risen against the Nazi occupation on August 1st — and for 63 days, they fought street by street, building by building, with dwindling ammunition and no relief in sight. The Soviet Army sat across the Vistula River and did not move. The Allies were desperate to help.
On September 18, 1944, the 463rd Bomb Group and other Fifteenth Air Force units flew one of the longest and most dangerous supply missions of the entire war — from bases in southern Italy to Warsaw, Poland and back. Over 1,700 miles round trip. No fighter escort for most of the route. Through flak, through weather, through exhaustion. They dropped supplies over a burning city to fighters who had almost nothing left.
This WWII tribute tee honors the airmen of the 463rd Bomb Group who flew that mission — and the Polish resistance fighters who received those drops and kept fighting until the very end.
The Warsaw Airlift — A Mission History Owes
The Warsaw Uprising of 1944 was one of the largest and most tragic resistance operations of World War II. The Polish Home Army — the Armia Krajowa — fielded over 40,000 fighters against a German force that ultimately leveled the city. Allied supply drops, including the September 18th mission flown by the 463rd Bomb Group and other units of the Fifteenth Air Force, delivered weapons, ammunition, and medical supplies at enormous cost. Many aircraft were lost. Many crews did not return. The Warsaw Uprising ended on October 2, 1944. The city was destroyed. But the courage of those who fought — and those who flew for them — endures.
