Activated in 1962 as the first dedicated helicopter ambulance unit in Vietnam, the 57th flew day and night, in weather that grounded other aircraft, into landing zones still under fire. The crew chiefs and medics who flew those missions were some of the most decorated and least recognized heroes of the Vietnam War.
