The plan was theirs. For weeks before July 30, 1864, the United States Colored Troops of the 4th Division, XXV Corps had trained specifically for the assault that would follow the explosion at Petersburg. They drilled the flanking maneuvers. They rehearsed the advance. They were ready — and they were the best-prepared unit for the mission.

Then, the night before the assault, they were pulled from the lead. Political pressure from Union commanders who feared the optics of sending Black soldiers into a high-casualty operation — and who did not want to be accused of using them as cannon fodder — resulted in a last-minute substitution of white troops who had not trained for the mission. The explosion went off. The untrained troops faltered in the crater. And then the USCT was sent in — into a trap, against a reorganized Confederate defense, with no chance of the surprise that had been the plan's entire foundation.

This tribute tee honors the soldiers of the XXV Corps, USCT who fought at the Battle of the Crater — men who were ready, were denied, and then were sent in anyway. Their courage in that moment, against those odds, is one of the most profound acts of military valor in American history.

The Battle of the Crater — The Betrayal and the Valor

The 4th Division USCT entered the crater after Confederate forces under Brigadier General William Mahone had already counterattacked and reorganized. They fought in a killing ground — a 170-foot-wide, 30-foot-deep pit with no cover and no exit — against an enemy that had regained its footing. Many Black soldiers and their white officers who attempted to surrender were killed. It was a war crime. The men who kept fighting anyway — knowing what awaited them if they stopped — demonstrated a courage that has no adequate name.
