1ST KANSAS COLORED INFANTRY REGIMENT
The 1st Kansas Colored Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The regiment was organized by Senator James Henry Lane at Fort Scott, Kansas and mustered in on January 13, 1863. The regiment was made up of ex-slaves from Arkansas and Missouri and was the first black infantry regiment to see combat in the war. The regiment participated in the battle of Island Mound, Missouri on October 28, 1862.
