The mission was supposed to take an hour. It lasted eighteen. On the afternoon of October 3, 1993, a combined force of U.S. Army Rangers, Delta Force operators, and 160th SOAR Night Stalker helicopter crews launched a daylight raid into the Bakara Market district of Mogadishu, Somalia — the most dangerous neighborhood in one of the most dangerous cities on earth. The objective: capture two lieutenants of Somali warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid.

Within minutes of the assault, two MH-60 Black Hawk helicopters were shot down by RPG fire. What followed was one of the most intense urban combat engagements in American military history — a night of fighting through narrow alleyways, rooftop positions, and burning vehicles, against thousands of armed Somali militia, with no armor support and no way out except through the enemy.

This tribute tee honors every soldier who fought in the Battle of Mogadishu — the Rangers who held the crash sites, the Delta operators who fought their way to the downed crews, the Night Stalkers who kept flying into a city that was shooting back, and the men who gave everything so that no one would be left behind.

Eighteen Americans were killed in action. Seventy-three were wounded. Two Delta Force snipers — Master Sergeant Gary Gordon and Sergeant First Class Randall Shughart — voluntarily inserted into the second crash site knowing they would be vastly outnumbered, to protect the wounded crew until help could arrive. Both were killed. Both were awarded the Medal of Honor — the first awarded since the Vietnam War. The Battle of Mogadishu remains one of the most studied examples of small-unit courage, tactical improvisation, and the unbreakable bond between soldiers under fire. No man left behind was not a slogan that night. It was a promise kept at the highest possible cost.
